Pro Tip: Keyboard Shortcuts In Reviews & Lessons

We don’t want you to have to take your hands of the keyboard while doing your lessons/reviews (much faster that way) so here are keyboard shortcuts to make this possible! They are:

W or ←: Move to the previous lesson section.

D or →: Move to the next lesson section.

SPACE: Move on to the next lesson section.

ENTER: Submit an answer. Hit it again to move on to the next review / lesson.

We’ll be adding something into the actual lessons and reviews pages telling you what these are with the next (large) update. In the meantime, though, you can use these shortcut keys and know that you’re shaving minutes off each review session. Think of how many Dorito Tacos you could eat with this saved time.

New Profiles & More (Alpha Updates May 29, 2012)

    WaniKani Public Profile

Viet’s been working hard on a lot of changes (thanks for all your feedback!) for WaniKani. An update just went out that does the following things, some of them pretty big!

    • New profile page that matches with the rest of the site (and has a fancier header bar). Not much to put here now, but it’ll get more useful in the future.
    • Radio buttons are more clickable!
    • Time required to get Level 1 Radicals to Guru reduced. It is now possible to unlock the first set of kanji in 38 hours instead of ~5 days. All radical levels above level 1, and all kanji/vocab will stay on the regular spacing, though. We decided that level 1 radicals were easy enough to accelerate them.
    • Images added to the explanations for Apprentice, Guru, Master, and Enlightenment levels.
    • Fixed the issue where your dashboard says you have reviews available now right after finishing all your reviews.
    • Better explanations on the above levels.
    • Added a white background for avatars that have a transparent background.
    • Changed progress bars to be smaller when they’re at 0%.
    • Added in Audio for all Level 1 Vocabulary. Go check out the individual Level 1 Vocabulary pages to try it out.

Of course, there’s plenty more to be done, but hopefully some of these things will be enjoyable for you and your studies! Coming up sometime in the future is updates to the reviews/lessons pages, adding an about us page, and then after that a forum for all of you sophisticated people… I don’t really have a specific timeline for these changes and updates, but that’s generally what we’re thinking is coming next.

Any must-have features / changes you folks are thinking about right now after using WaniKani for a bit?

    WaniKani New Looks

Parts of WaniKani got updates today. Some things that were changed:

    • Dashboard
    • Little question marks telling you more about certain sections
    • A to-do list for new sign-ups letting them know what they’re supposed to be doing.
    • Kanji, Radicals, & Vocab pages have some visual changes done.
    • Tablet and Mobile friendly… at least the parts that aren’t the reviews and tests. We’ll be looking at that next.
    • A lot of little things you nice alpha testers have sent in got fixed as well.

Right now we’re still in private alpha so there’s plenty more work to be done. Keep sending in feedback if you notice anything! It really helps us to know what needs to be changed or fixed.

Also, we’ll restart sending out alpha invites today too. Just sent out 80 of them, so check those inboxes. Should get all the alpha invites out by the end of the week, we’re hoping!
